Ships in Small Bottles (coming in January) includes small projects to accompany each Psalm and poem in the collection. Call it a kinetic devotional.
December 2 in The Other Stars Hover & Wait begins with a poem called “Emergency” about a nurse breaking ribs during CPR, and thinking of the mosaic windows of stained glass in grand cathedrals.
As part of your meditation today, try this exercise.
What You Need:
- tissue paper
- contact paper (that sticky clear paper that comes in rolls for lining drawers and covering books)
- a gingerbread man cookie cutter
- scissors
Apprentice Practice:
Cut the tissue paper into irregular, even jagged shapes for the disappointments, losses, and divisions you’ve felt in 2020. Arrange the pieces into a mosaic on a peeled/sticky square of contact paper. Seal the mosaic with another square of contact paper on top. Trace a gingerbread man on the mosaic and cut out an image of wholeness made beautiful by the coming light.
Advanced Art:
Make more. Join them into a garland of gladness for your window, a tiny community rejoicing in the way that healing comes, building what was broken into strength.
