December 23

Ships in Small Bottles launches in 1 week.  In 1 week, Christmas will be complete, but the projects don’t have to end.  Click here to look over a NEW devotional for 2021.

December 23 in The Other Stars Hover & Wait begins with a poem called “Lesson for Those of Us Learning to Ask” about the possibilities of punctuation and the way periods and exclamation points have nothing on question marks for transforming relationships.

As part of your meditation today, try this exercise.

What You Need:

  • cardstock
  • fine tip marker or pen (folks in the know like Pigma Micron ink pens)
  • a round glass

Apprentice Practice:

Drawing can feel as vulnerable as asking because we begin without knowing the ending.  Engage this vulnerability by trying a “zentangle.”  Incorporate shapes that echo or repeat question marks as you fill in the spaces.  When you finish, place your glass over the drawing and trace around it, then cut out the ornament shape.  On the back, ask God for something in the coming year.  Phrase it as a question rather than a statement: “Will you please give me strength?” rather than “Give me strength.”  Leave the question open instead of controlling it as a polite demand.  Fill your glass with cool water and be refreshed as you hang the ornament on your tree and wait on God’s reply.

Advanced Art:

Put the ornament away with your seasonal decorations.  Get it out again in 2021 and see how God answered.
